Start of a new series, we are going to win.
To win this series, we need to go all in
And you need to skate fast like you're going downwind.
No goals from McDavid
Lock him up because he heats up fast like a microwave.
Even if you're quick you won’t catch him.
You need to stay out of the sin bin and behave
Can’t McDavid control the game. We can’t let 'em!
Underdog story, win this series and secure yourself on the Cup
Play like your life is on the line!
Reflection
When writing Game Plan I used inspiration from the Edmonton Oilers once again; this speech takes place before the series of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Edmonton Oilers and the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Tampa Bay Lightning’s game plan is to not let McDavid control the game. I use couplet and alternate rhyming to convey this; couplet rhyming can be seen on lines 2 and 3 whereas I show alternate rhyming on lines 5 through 8.
No goals from McDavid
Lock him up because he heats up fast like a microwave.
Even if you're quick you won’t catch him.
You need to stay out of the sin bin and behave
Can’t McDavid control the game. We can’t let 'em!
I used a simile when saying that “he heats up fast like a microwave” I did this to relate McDavid’s skill to how fast it takes to get warmed up. I use a metaphor when I say “ sin bin” which means if you don’t play by the rules you will go to the penalty box and would be sinning to the rules of the game. I use exclamation marks throughout the poem to give it the vibe of it being a pre game speech because you are not going to be talking in monotone voice the whole time. I use a caesura in the poem here “Can’t McDavid control the game. We can’t let 'em!” I do this to exaggerate the second half of the line, this adds to the exclamation mark.
